Mechanical and Hygroscopic Characteristics of Unidirectional Jute/Glass and Jute/Carbon Hybrid Laminates

Physical and mechanical performance of natural fiber composites can be tailored by hybridizing with synthetic fibers. Jute fibers are promising highly available at a low cost in some countries, they have been used several applications, the extra benefit helping socially depressed people who commonly explore this plant. This work investigates effect hybridization on properties jute/glass jute/carbon laminates polyester resin. Nine different were manufactured vacuum infusion using unidirectional jute, E-glass, carbon fabric reinforcements. Tensile, flexural, short beam tests performed accordance ASTM standards. The hybrid showed generally intermediate compared to non-hybrid two-component laminates. 50–75% smaller than those their respective pure glass composites, but 30–300% higher jute composite. Among hybrids, number layers played most important role properties, rather layup. That is, variation fabrics may produce required combination stiffness strength for applications. Besides, laminates, more better hygroscopic performance.
